FAQ

What happens if I remodel or move and keep the old certificate?

It's no good: the certificate covers one specific space. If there's an inspection or an incident, it's as if you didn't have one, with the risk of closure.

Why update if I already had a certificate?

Because it covers one specific space: if the space changes, the old certificate is no longer valid.

How much does it cost?

The professional fee, from $90, covers the full handling of the update; the fire department's fee is separate.

Does it only apply to relocations?

No: it also applies to remodeling, expansions or changes of use.

What does the timing depend on?

On your local Cuerpo de Bomberos and its inspection schedule.

About this procedure

The fire department compliance certificate covers one specific physical space, with the exits, installations and layout that were evaluated during the inspection. So the moment that space changes (you remodeled, expanded, knocked down a wall, changed how an area is used, or moved to new premises), the certificate you had no longer reflects reality, and it stops protecting you and stops working for you with city hall. A certificate that describes premises that no longer exist as they were is, in practice, an invalid certificate.
This catches a lot of people off guard. They think that because they already have their certificate they're covered forever, so they remodel or move and keep operating with the old paper, until an inspection finds that the premises don't match what was certified, or until city hall asks for the updated certificate for the new address. At that point the issue is twofold: on top of the inspection finding, the whole business license tied to that location can be called into question.
We bring the certificate in line with your actual premises: we handle the new inspection of the remodeled space or the new location and update your compliance certificate with the Cuerpo de Bomberos. The price starts at $90 and is adjusted to your case. A lawyer reviews your situation and confirms everything before we start, no strings attached.
