FAQ
What happens if I don't get the adoption note entered?
The birth certificate still doesn't reflect the new family bond. For school, travel and inheritance, the child is still someone else's child. The marginal note is what completes the adoption.
Does this make the adoption show on the record?
Yes. We enter the adoption marginal note on the birth certificate so it's official.
How much does it cost?
The professional fee, from $45, covers handling the marginal note; official fees, if any, are separate.
Why isn't the adoption ruling enough?
Because until the marginal note is entered, the record doesn't reflect the new bond.
What do I need?
A certified copy of the ruling with its enforcement order (auto de ejecución); if you don't have it, we'll get it.
About this procedure
Adoption is a court decision that changes a person's parentage: legally and for all purposes, the adoptee becomes the child of their adoptive parents. But the court's decree has to be reflected in the Registro Civil (Civil Registry: births, marriages, deaths) through an update to the record and the corresponding marginal note, so the adoptee's identity documents show their new family reality: surnames, parentage and rights. It's a procedure that calls for care and discretion, because it touches the most personal part of a family, and doing it right ensures the child is fully protected on paper. We make sure the final adoption decree is properly entered at the Registro Civil, with the marginal note and the record update the law requires, and we stand by you with the sensitivity this moment deserves. The result: the record reflects what's already true in the family's heart.
