General authorization

Before a government notary office · SAREN

A document in which you allow another person, in writing and before a notary, to carry out a specific errand or procedure on your behalf. It's lighter than a power of attorney and works for one-off tasks; the key is to set the scope precisely so the authorized person does only what you need.

FAQ

What happens if I send someone to handle my procedure without a notarized authorization?

They get turned away at the window. Almost no institution accepts a third party with a plain letter; signing before a notary is what gives it weight.

How is it different from a power of attorney?

An authorization covers specific, limited errands; a power of attorney grants broad, formal representation.

How much does it cost?

The professional fee, from $40, covers drafting tailored to the procedure and handling the notary step; the official notary fee, per page, is separate.

Will any institution accept it?

It depends on their requirements; that's why we draft it to fit the procedure and recommend giving it an expiration date.

Do I have to go in person?

Yes, with a valid cédula.

About this procedure

A general authorization is the document in which one person allows another, in writing and before a notary, to carry out a specific errand, pickup or procedure on their behalf. It's the answer for those everyday tasks where you need someone to act for you but don't need the full formality of a power of attorney: authorizing a family member to pick up some documents, letting an employee handle something at an institution, authorizing someone to collect a vehicle or a package, or giving permission for a one-off school or banking errand. The difference from a power of attorney is one of degree: a power of attorney grants broad, formal representation to act and make binding commitments in important matters; an authorization covers simpler, narrower tasks. Where we put our care is the scope: an authorization drafted too broadly can let the person do more than you wanted, and one drafted too narrowly can fall short and be turned down for the procedure. We draft it spelling out exactly what the person can do, for what purpose and for how long, and we have it authenticated at the Notaría Pública (government notary office) to give it fecha cierta (a legally certain date, so the document holds up against third parties) and legal weight. If what you need is broad representation for important acts (selling, buying, representing you in court, managing assets), what you need isn't an authorization but a power of attorney; we'll guide you on which one suits you.
