FAQ

What happens if my partner and I don't have any certificate?

To a bank, an insurer or in an emergency, you're two strangers. The certificate is the fastest way to prove your de facto union.

What is the cohabitation certificate for?

It proves your de facto union for property, insurance or benefit procedures.

How much does it cost?

The professional fee, from $35, covers the full handling; official fees, if any, are separate.

Does it work abroad?

It needs an apostille; we handle that separately.

Is it the same as registering a stable union?

No. Registering the union gives it full legal effects. We tell you which one suits you.

About this procedure

The cohabitation certificate (constancia de concubinato) proves to third parties that two people live together as a stable couple without being married, and it's requested for very specific things: adding your partner to an insurance policy or to employee benefits or the health system, for certain loans, or as support in housing procedures. It's different from the formal registration of a unión estable de hecho (registered de facto union), which has the full effects of marriage; the certificate is lighter and serves to prove cohabitation for one-off procedures. We advise you on which of the two suits you based on what you need, and we handle the right one. If all you need is to prove the relationship for a benefit, we get you the certificate; if what you want is to protect inheritance and property, we take you to the registration of the unión estable de hecho, which we also handle. We tell you straight which one works for you.
