FAQ

What happens if I travel or process the child's documents with the adoption not legalized?

They'll ask about the biological parents. The legalized ruling is the proof, before any authority, that you're the child's father or mother.

Why legalize an adoption ruling?

To make the adoption count before authorities, especially abroad.

How much does it cost?

The professional fee, from $35, covers legalization at the Registro Principal; official fees are separate, and the apostille is added if it's going abroad.

Does the ruling have to be final?

Yes, final and non-appealable; we check it for you first.

What if it was issued in another country?

That requires an exequatur; we'll guide you.

About this procedure

An adoption ruling creates the legal bond between the adoptive parent and the child, and you need it legalized to get the child's cédula (Venezuelan national ID card) or passport, change the surname, enroll the child in school, or travel and move abroad with the child. Outside the court that issued it, it requires legalization by the Registro Principal. We check that it's final and non-appealable, handle the legalization at the Registro Principal or through the online system of SAREN (Venezuela's registries and notaries service), and hand it to you ready. If the adoption was granted in another country and you want it recognized in Venezuela, that's an exequatur (court recognition of a foreign judgment), a separate court procedure we also handle; we'll guide you based on your case.
