FAQ

What happens if I handle property or paperwork with an unlegalized separation?

To third parties, you're still married with no separation: the legalized separation is what makes the change count with banks, registries and authorities.

Why legalize a separation ruling?

To make it valid before third parties or authorities abroad.

How much does it cost?

Professional fees from $35 cover the legalization at the Registro Principal; official registry fees are separate, and the apostille is added if it's going abroad.

Do I need it apostilled?

Only if you'll use it outside Venezuela; we'll guide you.

What if it was issued in another country?

That requires an exequatur (court recognition of a foreign judgment); we'll guide you.

About this procedure

A legal separation (separación de cuerpos) suspends the spouses' life together and usually separates their property too, without dissolving the marriage yet. You need it legalized for property matters, to update your marital status, or as the basis for converting it into a divorce later. Outside the court that issued it, it requires legalization (official verification of a signature or document) from the Registro Principal. We handle the legalization at the Registro Principal or through the online system of SAREN (Venezuela's registries and notaries service), and hand it to you ready to use. If you'll use it abroad, we also handle the apostille (Hague Convention certification for use abroad). If your end goal is a divorce, we guide you through the conversion step.
