FAQ
What happens if my foreign partner shows up with documents that aren't apostilled or translated?
The Registry won't marry them: they get turned away at the window and the wedding gets postponed. It's the most common stumbling block in these weddings.
What does a foreigner need to get married here?
Apostilled and translated documents; we prepare and validate everything.
How much does it cost?
The professional fee, from $65, covers reviewing the foreign documents, the file and the coordination; official registry fees, the apostille and the translation are extra.
Do I have to be there?
Yes, for the ceremony; we handle the documents and translations for you.
Do they need to be in Venezuela legally?
They must have their immigration status in order, depending on the case; we advise you before setting a date.
About this procedure
When one or both partners are foreign nationals, a civil marriage gets more delicate because documents from another country come into play, and that's where people get stuck. The foreign partner's birth certificate must come with an apostille (Hague Convention certification for use abroad) or a legalization (official verification of a signature or document); if they're divorced, their foreign divorce decree isn't enough: they need a Venezuelan exequatur that recognizes it here, and without it the registry won't marry them; if they have minor children, there are extra requirements; and proof of residence or a valid visa is usually requested. It's a puzzle of Venezuelan and foreign documents that has to be put together in the right order. We're experts at that crossover: we tell you exactly which documents the foreign partner needs and how to bring them in valid form, handle the exequatur if needed, get whatever applies apostilled or legalized, put together the complete file and coordinate the wedding. One team for both sides of the procedure.
Legal framework and important notes
Ley Orgánica de Registro Civil (Organic Civil Registry Law) · Código Civil (Civil Code) · Constitución de la República Bolivariana de Venezuela (Constitution of Venezuela)
- The foreign partner submits an apostilled or legalized birth certificate; if divorced abroad, they need the exequatur of that judgment, the proceeding before the Supreme Tribunal of Justice that gives it legal effect in Venezuela
- Residence or a valid visa may be required
- Exequatur and apostille are separate services that we also handle
We guarantee our service, not what the agency decides. If something depends on them, we tell you clearly and in time.
