FAQ
What happens if I don't formally acknowledge my child?
In the eyes of the law, they're not your child. They don't carry your surname, don't inherit from you, and get no support or insurance through you. Acknowledgment is what gives them their rights.
How do you acknowledge a child at the Registro Civil?
With the father's statement entered in the record; we prepare and handle the act.
How much does it cost?
The professional fee, from $40, covers preparing and handling the acknowledgment; official fees, if any, are separate.
Does it count for child support or inheritance?
Yes. Once the acknowledgment is recorded, the child has the rights they're entitled to.
Can I acknowledge an adult child?
Yes; depending on the case, their consent is required. We'll guide you.
About this procedure
Acknowledging a child gives them their full identity and all their rights: carrying the father's surname, inheriting, receiving child support and appearing legally as part of the family. Voluntary acknowledgment is done at the Registro Civil, either when the baby's birth is registered or later, even when the child is already an adult, in which case the child's consent is needed. It's a simple act with enormous legal and emotional weight, and it pays to do it right so it stands firm, with no room for future disputes. We handle the procedure for you, explain what's needed for your case, check that the certificate comes out correct and hand it to you. If, on the other hand, the other parent refuses to acknowledge the child, that's no longer a voluntary acknowledgment but a paternity suit (inquisición de paternidad), which we also handle as a separate service.
Legal framework and important notes
Ley Orgánica de Registro Civil (Organic Civil Registry Law) · Código Civil (Civil Code)
- Voluntary acknowledgment is done at the Registro Civil; if the child is an adult, their consent is required
- If the other parent refuses, the route is a court case (a paternity suit, or inquisición de paternidad), a separate service
We guarantee our service, not what the agency decides. If something depends on them, we tell you clearly and in time.
