FAQ

What happens if I signed the acknowledgment and the note isn't entered?

The birth record still doesn't show the father. For surname, support and inheritance, the bond doesn't exist. The marginal note is what makes it real.

Will this get the child acknowledged on the record?

Yes. We get the acknowledgment marginal note entered on the birth record.

How much does it cost?

The professional fee, from $40, covers handling the marginal note; official fees, if any, are separate.

Why isn't signing the acknowledgment enough?

Because until the marginal note is entered, the bond isn't reflected on the record.

What do I need?

The document of the acknowledgment already made; if you haven't done it yet, that's the prior service.

About this procedure

When a father acknowledges a child, or when a judgment declares parentage, that fact has to be reflected on the child's birth record through a marginal note (annotation added to a recorded document). Otherwise, the record still doesn't show the father and the acknowledgment doesn't take full practical effect: surname, inheritance rights, obligations and benefits. It's common for the acknowledgment to be made but left halfway because the annotation on the record was never completed, or for it to come from a court judgment that has to be taken to the Registro Civil to be entered. We make sure that acknowledgment, whether voluntary or by final court decision, is properly entered as a marginal note on the birth record, and we hand you the updated record with the parentage reflected. That way the bond between father and child is complete, with all its legal effects, which is what really matters for the child's future.
