FAQ

What happens if I don't record the paternity challenge ruling?

The birth record keeps saying what the court already disproved: the challenged paternity stays in force for everyone until the ruling is recorded.

Why record the paternity challenge?

So the change in parentage takes effect against everyone and shows on the record.

How much does it cost?

The professional fee, from $40, covers handling the recording and the correction of the record; official registry fees are separate.

Does the ruling have to be final?

Yes, with its enforcement order; we check it for you beforehand.

What do I need?

The certified copy of the ruling with its enforcement order.

About this procedure

A paternity challenge is the court case used to disprove a parentage shown on the birth record. But the court's ruling doesn't change the birth record on its own: for it to take effect against everyone and for the record to be corrected, the ruling must be recorded at the Registry and the corresponding marginal note (annotation added to a recorded document) added. That registry step is what makes the decision enforceable against third parties and lets the person's civil status be truly updated. We start from your final ruling and its final enforcement order: we check that it's final, handle the recording at the Registry and follow up on the marginal note on the record. We stay with you until it's properly recorded. If you're still in the paternity challenge case or need to correct other documents that follow from it, we handle those services too.
