Release of retention of title (reserva de dominio)

Before a government notary office · SAREN

The procedure done once a vehicle bought on credit is paid off: the release of the retention of title is registered at the INTT, which removes the lien and leaves the car fully in the buyer's name. Without this step, ownership stays restricted even if you've already paid everything.

FAQ

What happens if I finished paying but don't cancel the retention of title?

The car still carries a lien in favor of the lender. You can't sell it clean and it isn't fully yours, even if you don't owe a single bolívar.

Who issues the payoff letter?

The bank or dealership that financed you; with it, we do the rest.

How much does it cost?

The professional fee, from $45, covers the process at the INTT. The official fee is low and paid separately; we give you the exact figure up front.

Can I sell the car without releasing the retention of title?

It's not a good idea; release it first, or the buyer inherits the lien.

Do you have a rate for dealers?

Yes, a volume partner price.

About this procedure

When you buy a car on credit with retention of title, you use the vehicle from day one, but full ownership isn't yours until you pay the last installment. And here's what many people don't know: paying the last installment isn't enough. Until the release of the retention of title is registered at the INTT, that car still shows up with a lien, which means you can't freely sell it or deal with it as its full owner. Canceling the retention of title is exactly that final step: with the release letter issued by the bank or dealership, plus the vehicle's registration certificate and the INTT form, the release is registered and the car comes out clean, fully in your name. With a car-paperwork advisor's know-how, we handle the whole process for you: we check that you have the right release letter, generate the single procedure form, gather the required documents and file the registration at the INTT, so you don't have to go from office to office. If an attorney-in-fact handles the procedure on your behalf, a notarized power of attorney is also needed, and we can take care of that too. And if you're a dealer or handle several releases a month, we have a preferred partner rate.
