Sworn statement

Before a government notary office · SAREN

It's a statement you make under oath before the notary, to formally record a fact that a procedure requires of you: your income, that you support someone, where you live, your marital status. The delicate part isn't signing it but drafting it well, because you answer for what you say.

FAQ

What happens if I submit the statement without notarial authentication?

Most agencies, banks and embassies won't accept it; without the notary's certification it's just an ordinary letter. The notarially authenticated one is what carries weight.

Does the notary guarantee that what I declare is true?

No, the notary certifies that you swore before them; the truth is your responsibility.

How much does it cost?

The professional fee, from $40, covers the drafting and handling at the notary; the official fee is separate, and the apostille, if it's going abroad, is handled as a separate service.

Does it work for embassies?

Yes, and if it's going abroad it usually needs an apostille.

Do I have to go in person?

Yes, with your valid cédula.

About this procedure

A sworn statement is the document through which a person states under oath, before a notary, that a fact or situation they know of is true. It's one of the most requested documents in everyday life, because countless procedures require it: declaring your monthly income for a loan or a rental, declaring that you financially support a family member (dependency), declaring where you live, your marital status, the lawful origin of certain funds, or any fact an institution asks you to prove on your word. The notary certifies that you appeared and swore before them; the truthfulness of what you declare is your responsibility, and making a false statement has legal consequences. The point where most people slip up, and where we make the difference, is the drafting: each procedure has its own wording and language. A statement of income for an embassy isn't drafted the same way as one for a bank; a dependency statement for Venezuelan Social Security asks for specific details. If the statement is poorly framed, it gets sent back and you've made the trip for nothing. We first ask you what it's for, draft the statement in the exact form that destination requires, and get it authenticated. If your statement needs to come with supporting documents, see Sworn statement on attached documents; if it's specifically to prove that you don't own a home, we have the Sworn statement of not owning a home.
