FAQ

What happens if the will has to be valid abroad and it isn't legalized?

The deceased's last wishes aren't applied in that country. Legalized and apostilled, the will governs wherever the property or the heirs are.

Why legalize a will?

To enforce it before authorities or abroad, based on the document already signed.

How much does it cost?

Professional fees from $40 cover the legalization and, if applicable, the apostille; official fees are separate.

Do I need it apostilled?

Only if you'll use it outside Venezuela; we'll guide you.

Do you draft wills?

Yes, it's a separate notary service; here we legalize the will already signed.

About this procedure

A will is the document in which a person sets out their last wishes about their property. When a will has to take effect outside the country, or when an heir abroad needs to enforce it over property in Venezuela, it must be legalized (official verification of a signature or document) and, if it's going abroad, apostilled (Hague Convention certification for use abroad). The chain starts at the registry or Notaría Pública (government notary office) where it's kept, goes through SAREN (Venezuela's registries and notaries service) and ends with the apostille from the MPPRE (Venezuela's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which issues apostilles). We start from the will as already signed: we check that it was properly formalized, handle its legalization through SAREN's online system and process the apostille. We deliver the document ready, so the last wishes are honored wherever needed. If the will hasn't been signed yet and you want to plan your estate, that's a service we also offer, in complete confidence.
